A Very Veteran Rockin' Christmas

A Very Veteran Rockin' Christmas

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Since your cheesy top 40 radio station only plays the same Christmas standards, I figured I’d make an episode with songs you don’t hear every year. You’ll hear lost Xmas classics by Joan Jett, Donnie Iris, Weird Al, The Damned and more. Hope this playlist gets your holiday spirit flowing and makes you forget about this crazy world. Some of these songs have the good kind of crazy (funny) including Father Christmas by The Kinks. Merry Christmas to all and to all, a good night and a Happy New 2024.

Big Country

Big Country

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Big Country is a rock band from Scotland that was formed in Dunfermline, Fife, back in 1981. They reached the peak of their popularity during the early to mid-1980s, but have managed to maintain a dedicated fan base throughout the years. Their music is a fusion of Scottish folk and martial music styles, and they cleverly crafted their guitar-driven sound to mimic the enchanting melodies of bagpipes, fiddles, and other traditional folk instruments.

During their heyday, from 1982 to 2000, the band boasted a "classic" lineup consisting of Stuart Adamson on vocals and guitar, Bruce Watson on guitar, Tony Butler on bass guitar, and Mark Brzezicki on drums. Unfortunately, tragedy struck in 2001 with Adamson's untimely death. However, the band made a comeback in 2007, reuniting with the surviving members. From 2010 to 2013, they even collaborated with Mike Peters from The Alarm as their lead vocalist. Since then, the band has soldiered on with only two of the original members, Watson and Brzezicki, and Simon Hough taking over vocal duties. Stuart Adamson's daughter, Kirsten Adamson, has triumphed in her father's footsteps as an award-winning singer/songwriter and even released a tribute song in 2023 to her late father called "My Father's Songs".

The Beatles: Now and Then

The Beatles: Now and Then

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
From www.thebeatles.com: The story of “Now And Then” begins in the late 1970s, when John recorded a demo with vocals and piano at his home in New York’s Dakota Building. In 1994, his wife, Yoko Ono Lennon, gave the recording to Paul, George and Ringo, along with John’s demos for “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love,” which were both completed as new Beatles songs and respectively released as singles in 1995 and 1996, as part of The Beatles Anthology project. At the same time, Paul, George and Ringo also recorded new parts and completed a rough mix for “Now And Then” with producer Jeff Lynne. At that point, technological limitations prevented John’s vocals and piano from being separated to achieve the clear, unclouded mix needed to finish the song. “Now And Then” was shelved, with a hope that one day it would be revisited.
Cut to 2021, and the release of “The Beatles: Get Back” docuseries, directed by Peter Jackson, which astonished viewers with its award-winning film and audio restoration. Using WingNut Films’ MAL audio technology, Jackson’s team had de-mixed the film’s mono soundtrack, managing to isolate instruments and vocals, and all the individual voices within The Beatles’ conversations. This achievement opened the way to 2022’s new mix of Revolver, sourced directly from the four-track master tapes. This led on to a question: what could now be done with the “Now And Then” demo? Peter Jackson and his sound team, led by Emile de la Rey, applied the same technique to John’s original home recording, preserving the clarity and integrity of his original vocal performance by separating it from the piano.
In 2022, Paul and Ringo set about completing the song. Besides John’s vocal, “Now And Then” includes electric and acoustic guitar recorded in 1995 by George, Ringo’s new drum part, and bass, guitar and piano from Paul, which matches John’s original playing. Paul added a slide guitar solo inspired by George; he and Ringo also contributed backing vocals to the chorus.
In Los Angeles, Paul oversaw a Capitol Studios recording session for the song’s wistful, quintessentially Beatles string arrangement, written by Giles Martin, Paul and Ben Foster. Paul and Giles also added one last, wonderfully subtle touch: backing vocals from the original recordings of “Here, There And Everywhere,” “Eleanor Rigby” and “Because,” woven into the new song using the techniques perfected during the making of the LOVE show and album. The finished track was produced by Paul and Giles, and mixed by Spike Stent.
Paul says: “There it was, John’s voice, crystal clear. It’s quite emotional. And we all play on it, it’s a genuine Beatles recording. In 2023 to still be working on Beatles music, and about to release a new song the public haven’t heard, I think it’s an exciting thing.”
Ringo says: “It was the closest we’ll ever come to having him back in the room, so it was very emotional for all of us. It was like John was there, you know. It’s far out.”
Olivia Harrison says: “Back in 1995, after several days in the studio working on the track, George felt the technical issues with the demo were insurmountable and concluded that it was not possible to finish the track to a high enough standard. If he were here today, Dhani and I know he would have whole-heartedly joined Paul and Ringo in completing the recording of ‘Now And Then.’”

Lou Reed Part 3 (1991-2013)

Lou Reed Part 3 (1991-2013)

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Part 3 of this three-part series on The Godfather of Alt Rock picks up after Songs for Drella was released, where Lou Reed collaborated with former VU bandmate John Cale. In 1991, Lou was set to create an album inspired by various magic themes he learned about from Mexico, but found himself writing more about loss, leading to the title of his 1992 album to be called Magic & Loss. Ahead of its 1992 release, What's Good (The Thesis) appeared on the motion picture soundtrack to Until The End of The World and became Lou's second #1 hit. Despite its criticism amongst rock purists and critics, the album became his best selling album in the UK. In 1993, The Velvet Underground reunited with all the original members for a tour, which led to a live album release that same year. In 1996, Lou Reed's Set The Twilight Reeling found this veteran rocker writing more whimsical tunes. The new millennium found Lou reflecting on past relationships and marriages on a concept album called Ecstasy. In 2003, Lou released The Raven, where he rewrites and sings selected poems and stories from Edgar Allen Poe with a long list of collaborators including David Bowie, The Blind Boys of Alabama and his then girlfriend he married in 2008: Laurie Andersen. Lou's final offering was an album recorded with Metallica called Lulu before passing away from liver disease in 2013.  Lou Reed, along with VU, inspired the sounds of many bands that came after his first decade and a half of making noise, including REM, and Pearl Jam.   Even though Lou isn't on the earth with us anymore, his full-on storytelling presence is something that will live on in all of us eternally.

Lou Reed Part 2 (1979-1990)

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.

Part 2 of this three-part series on the legendary Lou Reed picks up in the late 1970s after Street Hassle was released. Lou's 1979 follow-up to Street Hassle was a jazz-art-Rock album titled The Bells, an album Lou once told Mojo sold two copies of, and one of them was to him. The early 1980's found a sober Lou Reed confronting his demons on both The Blue Mask (1982) and Legendary Hearts (1983), then dabbling with pop on New Sensations in 1984. In 1989, Reed would score his first #1 with Dirty Blvd, which was on a raw, hard-hitting, guitar-driven rock album where Lou gets political called New York. At the end of Part 2, Lou Reed begins the nineties by collaborating with Velvet Underground bandmate John Cale on an Andy Warhol tribute album called Songs for Drella.

Prince's Purple Rain

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Prince's 1984 Purple Rain album/movie soundtrack is played in its entirety with wild behind the song stories about a movie that was almost not made. This is the second episode featuring the legendary Prince Rogers Nelson. The previous Prince episode on Veteran Rockers was episode 6 and was titled "The Early Days of Prince" and this episode picks up where that one left off. Following the success of 1999, Prince embarked on an ambitious music and movie project. Purple Rain is the sixth record from this Veteran Rocker. It was released on June 25, 1984, by as the soundtrack of the 1984 movie with the same title. Purple Rain had a tighter sound than Prince's previous albums, emphasizing complete band performances, layered guitars, synths, and other instruments. Prince's character in the movie was known as The Kid.
The album's lead single "When Doves Cry" sparked controversy among network big wigs, who thought it was too hot for TV. Another controversial aspect of this record was "Darling Nikki" raised complaints from Tipper Gore and the PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) and contributed to the implementation of the parental advisory stickers.
Music critics appreciated the innovational aspects of the soundtrack, most notably "When Doves Cry". Purple Rain is ranked among the greatest albums of all time with Rolling Stone putting it at number eight on its list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

The Kinks Part 3

The Kinks Part 3

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Following Dave Davies solo debut in 1980, The Kinks returned to the studio for Give The People What they Want in 1981, which featured the hits Destroyer and Better Days. In 1983, The Kinks were back on the UK charts with Come Dancing, which remains the band’s highest charting single in America, from the album State of Confusion. 1984’s Word of Mouth LP featured Do It Again and Living On A Thin Line, which were in high rotation on American rock stations.
The 1986 album Think Visual featured the mesmerizing but overlooked classic Lost and Found. The 1989 album UK Jive featured How do I Get Close and the catchy title track.
In 1990, all four members of the original Kinks lineup – Davies, Davies, Quaife, and Avory — were inducted into the prestigious American Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Three years later, The Kinks released their final album Phobia. The Kinks gave their final concert in 1996 and due to the Davies brothers creative tensions, the Kinks disbanded in 1997.
The Davies brothers reunited for one song in 2015 during a solo gig Dave was playing at Islington Hall. Even though this was the only sign of a Kinks reunion to date, their music lives on 60 plus years after releasing You Really Got Me. The Kinks really got us and that will never change.

The Kinks Part 2

The Kinks Part 2

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Part 2 picks up in 1970, as The Kinks have released Lola Vs. Powerman And The Moneygoround, a trip through the highs and lows of the music business. 1971′s Muswell Hillbillies album recalled Village Green’s collection of singing storybook tales and Everybody’s In Showbiz went Top 20 in 1972 with the ever so sweet Celluloid Heroes from that double album.
The remainder of the 1970s found these guys commenting on real-life situations and nothing was off the table. Especially with Preservation Act 1, Preservation Act 2, Soap Opera, and Schoolboys in Disgrace. The Kinks abandoned their concept album phase in 1977 as they created straightforward arena rock albums including Sleepwalker in 1977, Misfits in 1978, and Low Budget in 1979. Low Budget found them getting more noticed in America, gaining entry into the stadium rock circuit, and selling out Madison Square Garden in NYC.

The Kinks Part 1

The Kinks Part 1

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
In Part 1 of 2, of The Kinks you hear the stories behind their songs from 1964-1970. Quite possibly of the most critical and compelling band in English history is The Kinks. The Kinks have unquestionably left behind a legacy of legendary songs, many of which serve as the foundation for contemporary popular music, from their explosive beginnings as a part of the British Beat movement to their dives into concept albums, stadium rock, and acoustic balladeering. Ray and Dave Davies, brothers who grew up in Muswell Hill, North London, started The Kinks. With buddy Peter Quaife on bass, the gathering known as The Ravens played a blend of R&B and rowdy in an early setup. In the wake of getting an independent demo tape, the band was endorsed to Pye Records by record maker. Despite the Kinks' commercial success, a 1965 tour dispute with the American Federation of Musicians resulted in a 1969 appearance ban in the United States. Thus, with most UK groups shifting focus over to America's expanding blossom power upheaval for motivation, Dave looked no farther than his back garden for motivation. The tunes on collections Up close and personal and Something Different are loaded up with little pearls enumerating life around him - now and again amusing, some of the time critical, consistently sharp and melodic. In 1967, Dave Davies ventured into the spotlight as an independent craftsman for his hit Death of a Clown, a rare example of tunes co-composed by Dave and Ray. Over the next two years, Dave put out three more shiny singles, but none of them reached the same chart success as Death Of A Clown, so he decided not to make an album by himself. Part 1 ends with the classic 1970 song Lola that is based on a true story but not every single word.

The Cars

The Cars

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr were the founding members of The Cars. Before the formation of the band in 1976, Ocasek and Orr had collaborated on several projects under different names including a folk band called Milkwood in 1972. Gradually, Orr and Ocasek found themselves working with other musicians including Gregory Hawkes and Elliot Easton. Cap N' Swing was another band they led with Hawkes and Easton in 1974 but it wasn't until 1976, when David Robinson joined their band, when they became known as The Cars. Between 1978-1987, The Cars recorded five albums with all original members but disbanded in 1988 due to creative conflicts and staggering sales on their 1987 Door to Door Album. Ocasek resumed a solo career he first sown in 1982, and also produced Weezer's first two albums. Benjamin Orr died in 2000 but The Cars reunited for one last album in 2011 called Move Like This before Ric Ocasek died in 2019.

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
In 1986, Paul McCartney recruits 28 year old producer Hugh Padgham, who previously recorded for The Police, XTC, Peter Gabriel and Genesis. According to Paul McCartney in 1986, Paul told the New York Times, ''He (Hugh) dreamed he woke up one morning and had made this really bad, syrupy album with me." Perhaps that was a warning for Macca as Press to Play became one of his worst selling albums to date, but a Chicago Tribune's Lynn Van Matre called Press “McCartney's most rocking album in ages”. If you haven't heard Press to Play yet, you'll hear a few cuts off that album and can answer in a poll if you like the album or not. After feeling discouraged and lost, following the commercial failure of Press, Paul collaborated with Elvis Costello, leading to the recording of his 1989 album Flowers In The Dirt, which was better received commercially and critically. Ending the decade on a high note, Paul hit the road for the first time since touring with Wings in 1976. If you have the spotify free plan, you can still follow along with this playlist for Part 1 and 2 of Paul McCartney: Surviving the 1980's.

The Beatles and Beyond

The Beatles and Beyond

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
In this debut episode, The Beatles are discussed from their formative years to the solo careers, with songs (from Spotify) to tell their story. The Beatles were formed in Liverpool, England in 1957 with Paul McCartney and John Lennon as the nucleus members. George Harrison, who Paul knew from school, later joined the group, followed by Stuart Sutcliffe, and drummer Pete Best. Sutcliffe died at age 21, and Pete Best was replaced by Ringo Starr after the other three bandmates passed their audition for a major record company. Following their incredible success, the Beatles broke up in 1970 but managed to crank out memorable hits on their own. The closest thing to a Beatles reunion took place in 1995, only fifteen years after John Lennon's death, as part of The Beatles Anthology. Intro music by Mattia Signaroldi.
