Best known as the creator of My Life as a Teenage Robot, Rob takes us behind the scenes of Jenny Wakeman’s creation, the evolution of the show's unique retro-futuristic design, and why the series continues to resonate with fans more than 20 years later. We also discuss the show's anime influences, the unforgettable performances of legendary talents like Eartha Kitt, and some of the major storylines and secrets that were planned for a potential fourth season.

We also spend time talking about Rob's passion project, Mina and the Count, a cartoon that many nostalgic fans still consider one of the most underrated pilots ever created. Rob shares the emotional rollercoaster of trying to turn it into a series, how it nearly became part of Dexter’s Laboratory, and how its cancellation ultimately led to the creation of My Life as a Teenage Robot. 

Beyond animation, Rob discusses his journey into writing novels and how storytelling continues to be a driving force in his creative life. We dive deep into the origin story of Doug Funnie, how years of personal doodles eventually evolved into one of the most beloved Nicktoons of all time, and the emotional story behind Vanessa Coffey taking a chance on Jim’s vision after a single meeting. Jim also shares incredible behind-the-scenes insight into the creation of Doug, Doug Can’t Dance, Jumbo Pictures, the transition from Nickelodeon’s Doug to Disney’s Doug, and why the Disney era intentionally allowed the characters to grow emotionally alongside the audience.
