When Did Accountability Become Anti-Black?
Last week, we asked whether Black institutions and communities can establish standards without falling into respectability politics.
Apparently… y’all had A LOT to say.
After our discussion surrounding Tuskegee University, bonnets, durags, community accountability, and Black standards, the backlash came quickly—and this week, the TMC crew is addressing it head-on.
When does encouraging higher standards become policing Blackness?
Can we criticize behaviors within our own community without being labeled anti-Black?
Does every conversation about professionalism automatically center the “white gaze,” or is there room for Black people to establish expectations for ourselves on our own terms?
And maybe the biggest question:
Have we reached a point where accountability itself is being treated as disrespect?
The crew responds to the criticism, clarifies where we stand, and digs even deeper into the uncomfortable tension between community standards, cultural identity, respectability politics, and self-determination.
Before things get heated, we kick off the episode with some classic TMC shenanigans, including predictions for Donell Jones vs. Joe, thoughts on Jonathan Majors’ career trajectory, and more.
Later, The Shenanigan Report leads us into another heartbreaking conversation surrounding Black safety, violence, and the lessons we continue being forced to learn.
